Abstract:
he purpose of this thesis is to carefully compare open source database management systems. There are many open source database systems. I will compare in detail two most commonly used databases over the internet and in applications for the web. These two database systems are MySQL and Apache Derby. Both are suitable for small to medium sized applications such as record keeping for a single department, supporting classes in RDBMS, serving as the back end of single or limited purpose web applications.

Some examples are:
1. School of Nursing student database
2. Entomology database for Natural History Museum
3. LARC software in support of natural language instructions
4. Database teaching support, such as relational algebra emulation.

There are several reasons to choose these two databases over the other databases. Some of them are listed below:
1. Both the databases are free to use and we don't have any issue regarding their licensing like Oracle, MS SQL server.
2. These are the most commonly used databases over the web and are suitable for small sized to medium sized applications.
3. There is free online support for these databases. Other database companies charge for such support.
4. There is source code available for these databases whereas there is no source code available for the other databases.

The final goal is make it easier for application to choose the better of these two options for their particular software.
