Abstract:
Mass storage devices for Video-on-Demand (VOD) servers have conventionally been arrays of hard disk drives mainly because of their high storage capacities and affordable prices. Hard disk drives (HDD), however, incur an expensive overhead in energy consumption due to their inherent rotation-based mechanical mechanism. Recent advances in NAND flash memory technology have made flash memory based solid state disk (SSD) a promising alternative to traditional hard disk drive due to its nominal access time and lack of mechanical delays. More importantly, NAND flash SSD consumes much less energy, which will not only lower electricity bills but also reduce emissions of air pollutants. In this research, we propose a flash-driven storage architecture that exploits the benefits of both SSDs and HDDs for VOD servers. Further, we present an energy-efficient data management scheme called FAVE (flash assisted video management), which dynamically redistributes and replicates videos according to their changing popularity. Experimental results using a real-world trace demonstrate that FAVE achieves better system performance while noticeably saving energy compared to traditional round-robin scheme on pure hard disk based storage system.
