Abstract:
The recent popularity of Google Earth has highlighted the ability of 3D technologies to assist in Geographic Information Science (GIS). Several other free and open source 3D GIS applications have sprung up due to its popularity, but each of has focused on landscape visualization (the rendering of the terrain in 3D). This focus on landscape visualization has left other aspects of 3D GIS visualization largely unexplored.

This thesis will examine the use of 3D technology to create innovative 3D GIS visualization techniques. These techniques will include scalar field visualization through the use of pillars and extrusion, density surfaces constructed from data retrieved directly from Internet data sources, and a tracking display that will animate the progression of U.S. flight data over time.

As these techniques are investigated they will be implemented into a software application that allows the user to import common GIS data and visualize the data using the provided scientific visualization tools. We shall call this application the Geographic 3D Visualizer (g3v).
