Abstract:
The Language Acquisition and Resource Center at SDSU supports the teaching and learning of foreign languages in the United States through research, technology, and publications that are made available on their website. Particular attention is paid to less commonly taught languages, cross-cultural issues, language skills assessment, and teacher training. The aim of this thesis project is to build a data mining system for the website that would enable the staff at LARC to achieve two goals:
1. Derive association rules between groups of pages on the website that are visited together
2. Count the number of hits on each outgoing link from the main LARC website.
These goals would be achieved by tracking user sessions on the website, storing them in a database and later using data mining to form association rules between pages visited together on the website.
The application would run in the background while the users navigate through the website and collect data about the pages that are visited together. The new LARC website is developed using wordpress and hence, the application is in the form of a wordpress plugin. The language used for developing the plugin is PHP with MySQL as the underlying database.
