Abstract:
Conventional input devices such as keyboards and mice are far from ideal as a means for accessing automated public information kiosks. For example, consider a kiosk intended to provide visitor information at a zoo or other outdoor public facility. A keyboard or mouse attached to such a kiosk to provide user access to the kiosk's features is vulnerable to hazards such as theft, vandalism, damage from inclement weather or simply from daily exposure to the elements, and intentional or accidental misuse or abuse by users. Clearly it would be beneficial to develop an equally effective and readily available alternative input mechanism for automated kiosks that would mitigate these hazards. This project developed software enabling a user to deliver input to a suitably-equipped automated public information kiosk using a Bluetooth-enabled JSR-82-compliant cell phone to emulate a standard two-button mouse.
